Surgical Robotics Special Report - MassDevice

"Surgical robotics has become an exciting space over the past decade, with many large and small companies seeking to compete in a market long dominated by Intuitive Surgical.

According to The Motley Fool, someone who invested $10,000 in Intuitive stock a decade ago would have seen their investment grow tenfold in value by now. The sector still holds a great deal of promise: Allied Market Research predicted in 2023 that the global surgical robotics market size could more than double to $188.8 billion by 2032.

At MassDevice, we decided to go beyond our daily industry coverage to take a deeper dive and gather information on the robotic surgery companies that have caught our attention. Information gathered from the companies and other publicly available sources included: robot names and descriptions, applications, CEO and headquarters location, website URLs, regulatory status, total procedures, funding stage and money raised, and revenue.

We expect this inaugural annual report — which includes data on 57 companies — to be just the beginning.

Intuitive’s launch last year of its next-gen da Vinci 5 robot “widened the moat” for other companies seeking to challenge its decades of dominance of soft-tissue surgical robotics inside hospitals. Medtech giants Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson, however, continue to move forward on their respective Hugo and Ottava systems to compete against Intuitive.

Stryker, which has hinted at a potential soft-tissue move in the future, has enjoyed a great deal of success in orthopedic surgery with its Mako robots — with competitors bringing their own orthopedic surgery systems onto the market.

Meanwhile, a wide variety of companies, both large and small, are making interesting plays to carve out their niches in what is proving to be a dynamic and exciting field.
