A medical team in Brazil conducted the first interstate remote surgery on a pig this month. The procedure was performed by a surgeon in Campo Largo, Brazil, who controlled a surgical robot in João Pessoa remotely — more than 3,000 kilometres away. This surgery used an Internet connection, similar to the one used in homes, which proved robust enough for precise control of surgical tools and minimal latency. The researchers hope that similar emergency surgeries in humans could be performed across large distances.
