Force sensing for the da Vinci

People have long been arguing about the need for a force sensor and haptic feedback with the da Vinci System. There have been various solutions proposed by the research community,  and - as it was believed - Intuitive has also developed its method. Their 2005 patent "Force Sensing for Surgical Instrument" provides some insight into it.
